Hi there.
I’m Dr Sam McGlennon. A sustainability guide, vision enabler and problem solver. Based in NZ, with strong ties across the ditch to Australia.
Professionally, I’m here to help business & government design & implement robust approaches to their sustainability problems.
I’ve been at it since 2007.
Now I’m operating freelance through this consultancy, Confluence, which curates the best of sustainability thinking, expertise and facilitation to meet the contemporary sustainability challenges of business & government.
In early 2020 I realigned towards two especially critical aspects of sustainability I’m equipped to advise on: climate risk & resilience, and sustainable procurement & supply chains. I still deliver overarching sustainability strategy advice too.
My background.
I began my sustainability career in the Australian Department of the Prime Minister & Cabinet, where for 3 years (2007-2010) I worked on environmental, water and energy policy, along with aspects of environmental diplomacy.
I undertook a Masters in Environmental and Resource Economics at the Australian National University (2008-09), before becoming lead researcher for an ANU project focused on the energy, water and climate ‘policy nexus’ within Australia and the U.S. (2010-12).
My PhD (2011-15) through the ANU’s Fenner School included just under 2 years based at CIFOR in Bogor, Indonesia. The PhD critically reviewed efforts by governments, business and NGOs to disconnect tropical deforestation from supply chains of palm oil, timber, pulp & paper and Amazonian soya and beef.
I subsequently spent 3 years (2016-19) working for the NZ Sustainable Business Network, leading its collaborative Smart Procurement project, designing and co-facilitating the bi-annual Leadership in Sustainable Business course, and providing bespoke advisory services to several notable NZ companies.
In 2019 I founded Confluence, through which I proactively collaborate with others whose work I respect.
